The Alchemists Academy: Stones to Ashes Review + Giveaway

Hosted by I am a Reader, Not a Writer
This is my first time taking part in a blog tour. I've done a couple of cover reveals but this is new and I'm excited!

I have two stops in this tour, this is a review of the first book in The Alchemists Academy, Stones to Ashes, and on Friday I am doing another review of the second book in the series, Elemental Explosion. I suppose that's enough from me, on with the tour!

"What do you learn here...at the Academy?" Wirt asks. "Magic? The responsibility to use your powers responsibly?" Uh...something like that," his roommate Spencer said. "More like how to rule worlds."

Wirt, is used to being shuffled from foster home to foster home, adopting a devil-may-care attitude toward the world along the way. Now he s in a school he can t escape, learning to develop his latent magical abilities, for what use, he doesn't know...to save his world or to destroy it...

My Review

I thought this book was really good, there were a few mistakes here and there but overall this book was a really enjoyable read.

The book starts off with the main character, Wirt, being chased by three boys. He gets backed into a corner and starts to panic wishing that he was somewhere else and then, he is. Wirt ends up in a magical school called the Alchemists Academy and is stuck there until he can figure out a way to get home.

The Academy is in a tree, not just any tree but a gigantic tree with thousands upon thousands of rooms. The tree stretches across many different world and to navigate through this crazy place there is a 'transportation shaft'. The shaft is pretty much a giant whole that runs the height of the tree, all you have to do is picture your destination and then step into the great chasm before you, not at all scary. I think it's a very cool idea, the shaft and the tree, it would be a whole heap of fun to explore!

Wirt had two main friends in the book, Spencer and Alana, there was also Priscilla but she wasn't included as much as the others until the last few chapters. Spencer and Alana had known each other since they were very young and there was a constant banter between them. Wirt really liked them both though he had more romantic feelings for Alana. The characters and relationships were good. They could've been a little more developed in some places/ways but I liked them and had fun following their adventures!

The writing could've used a bit more description but I really liked this book and had a heap of fun reading it. The story was engaging and the characters were fun, I'm looking forward to reading more of Wirt and The Alchemists Academy.
