I’m dying, I thought. This was unexpected and not at all how I envisioned my death. I was supposed to die gardening in a flowerbed as a hundred-year-old woman, not as a seventeen-year-old trapped in a lake beneath inches of ice.

Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. She can’t take any chances. But when she starts to make friends for the first time in her life, she gets careless and lets her guard down. Big mistake.

As an Aura, Llona can manipulate light and harness its energy. But if she wants to survive, Llona will have to defy the Auran Council and learn to use her power as a weapon against the Vyken whose sole desire is to take her light. Now she’s caught in something even bigger than she can understand, with a power she can’t wield, and no one she can trust, except, just maybe, a mysterious stranger.

In this breathtaking and romantic adventure, Rachel McClellan delivers a truly mesmerizing story that will keep you guessing to the very end.

My Review

This book was so much more than I was expecting. I thought it would be a light paranormal romance, with maybe a little bit of depth, but not much. Fractured Light had a lot of depth, a lot of substance. There was light and there dark, in the perfect amounts I like my paranormal books to have. I really  enjoyed this book!

Fractured Light is about Llona, a girl who possesses the power of light and can manipulate it and use it to create warmth in others. Women with this power are known as Auras and they evoke goodness in the world, but unfortunately there are creatures called Vykens who have a nasty tendency of causing pain and hatred and sucking the blood and life out if Auras. This is super unfortunate for Llona as she isn't fully understanding of her powers and has a nasty killing-machine (Vyken) after her.

I really liked the story. Sure it was a little predictable in parts, but it was well written and well thought out so I became too focused on the story to try and deduce what would happen next. I adored the darkness weaved through the story. I don't like my stories to be light and fluffy, it just makes them feel so unreal, there has to be a dab of something darker if I'm to properly relate to a story. Rachel McClellan delivered well on that part, throwing in just enough dark to have me feel a connection to the characters and story, and to also emphasize the beauty/purity of the light.

I loved all the characters and how they were portrayed (I think they all fit into their roles perfectly!) and was over-the-moon at the fact there was no love triangle. The teenagers acted like teenagers, making mistakes and fumbling about trying to find the right path and it was another thing that had me relating to the book so well. The characters were real, the relationships were real, and even though this was a paranormal fiction, I found it very real.

Fractured Light was filled with the things I want in a book: great characters, good story and some substance to it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it to any paranormal fans.
