Synopsis:

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things—Ourea.

Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother’s recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book’s untamed power. Discovered by Ourea's royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict—a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn’t trust anyone… but she’s being hunted and can’t survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn’t know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

My Review

After reading the first few pages of this book I worried that it was going to be less of a fantasy and more of a paranormal romance. I've got nothing against paranormal romances but I've read so many lately it's getting a little tiring, and fantasy is my favourite genre so if your taking away from that element I'll get sad. Happily, Lichgates is a perfect combination of fantasy and romance, never letting the romance interfere with the lovely fantasy side of things.

Lichgates follows Kara and Braeden as they set about discovering themselves, each other, and what the world has left to offer them. It's written in third-person, swapping between focusing more heavily on Kara to Braeden, and back again. Both their stories are interesting and laced with many emotional struggles.

Almost as soon as Kara and Braeden meet you know that something is going to happen between them, and that was the paranormal romance element I was worried about. Even though the attraction between them is almost instant (as with a lot of books these days) acting upon it is not which is something I very much appreciate. Romance in this book plays more of a background role in this book. First is the fantasy, the quest to find out more of the Vagabond and to fix the rifts in the land, second is the personal demons and troubles that harass each of our young heroes, and third is the romance between my dear Kara and my darling Braeden. The balance is really good and I found myself relaxing into all the parts of this story.

I loved the world of Ourea. All the different creatures and clans, and the mix of good and evil spread throughout the land and its peoples. The different appearances and ways/laws of the different yakona groups was really well thought out, and also the hierarchies and different rules about magic and Bloods and the earth, really added to my picture of this world and I loved living in it!

Lichgates was a great fantasy novel. I'd recommend it to paranormal readers as well as to fantasy readers because a lot of this book is a good mix of both. I loved the new world, Ourea, and the variety of characters - some were fantastic and some rubbed me up the wrong way. The idea of the Grimoire was also fantastic and the whole idea of this book was great. I had a lot of fun reading it and living in the story.
