Synopsis:

Can fighting for the right side be the wrong thing to do?

Draven, the tyrant ruler of Elyndia for the last one thousand years, searches for the one who can fulfill his prophecy.

The Paladins, an elite band of warriors sworn to protect their way of life at all cost, search for the one with the ability to bring their world crumbling down.

An innocent girl, tormented by demons only she can see, lives on the brink of insanity and longs for a life of peace.

When seventeen-year-old Jade Rosenberg reads from an antique book, she has no idea she just read an incantation awaking her inherited power. But when opposing—and equally terrifying—groups invade her home, she learns she is descended from an enchanted realm and a member of a powerful race thought to have been hunted to extinction.

Ripped from her world, Jade is forced to seek refuge from those who want her dead. She is given one of two options and the time has come for her to make a choice: assassinate their sworn enemy…

Or sacrifice her soul.

My Review

This was a really nice fantasy novel. With just the right amount of darkness to keep it from being too goody-goody, but not being too dark that it might scare some people away. I enjoyed the story and the range of characters was great!

This book mainly took place in Elyndia, a magical world parallel to the earth accessible through portals. I was very interested in Elyndia and all it's various creatures, towns and peoples and was very excited to learn little bits and pieces throughout the book. I loved the not-so-rocky-rocks and the Wolves of Iden were so cool! I really wish we'd seen more of them - fingers crossed for the next books!

The first few sentences of this book completely grabbed and from then, I was hooked. Though it took me quite a while to completely understand what was happening right at the beginning, it is still one of my favourite scenes. The description and images conjured in those first lines really made me love this book.

Sometimes the story felt a bit all over the place, like it was jumping from one instance to another with no explanation in the middle, but the idea/plot of the story was really good! The places/creatures created were fantastic and I found the story intriguing and engaging. It would've been nice if the story flowed more from one scene to the next but I was happy with it and really enjoyed it none-the-less. I look forward to the rest of the series and hope to get more questions answered and immerse myself in the lovely world of Elyndia again.

Kriston JohnsonKriston Johnson lives in Southwest Washington with her husband, teenage son, and miniature Australian Shepherd. Her home rests at the fringe of an old growth forest that she insists is the home of Jason Voorhees. Her husband thinks that’s a ridiculous assumption, because everyone knows it’s really Bigfoot. Every summer Kriston participates in the annual pilgrimage to Faerieworlds, a real life faerie realm here on Earth, and has an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars, The Vampire Diaries, and Iron Man. Awakened is her first novel. You can visit her online at www.kristonjohnson.blogspot.com.
