Book Blitz: Spark Rising by Kate Corcino - Excerpt + Giveaway

Spark Rising

Spark Rising by Kate Corcino
NA Post-Apocalyptic/Sci-Fi
Published: 15th December 2014

All that’s required to ignite a revolution is a single spark rising.

Two hundred years after the cataclysm that annihilated fossil fuels, Sparks keep electricity flowing through their control of energy-giving Dust. The Council of Nine rebuilt civilization on the backs of Sparks, offering citizens a comfortable life in a relo-city in exchange for power, particularly over the children able to fuel the future. The strongest of the boys are taken as Wards and raised to become elite agents, the Council’s enforcers and spies. Strong girls—those who could advance the rapidly-evolving matrilineal power—don’t exist. Not according to the Council.

Lena Gracey died as a child, mourned publicly by parents desperate to keep her from the Council. She was raised in hiding until she fled the relo-city for solitary freedom in the desert. Lena lives off the grid, selling her power on the black market.

Agent Alex Reyes was honed into a calculating weapon at the Ward School to do the Council’s dirty work. But Alex lives a double life. He’s leading the next generation of agents in a secret revolution to destroy those in power from within.

The life Lena built to escape her past ends the day Alex arrives looking for a renegade Spark.

In Spark Rising, Agent Alejandro Reyes discovers Magdalena Gracey living deep in the desert of what was New Mexico. In this scene, written from Alex’s point of view, Alex reports back to his best friend and partner in revolution, Thomas, that he’s found a very strong rogue Spark…and Thomas has been waiting for the moment for a very long time.

“You found one?”

“Oh, yeah.”

Thomas’s quirked lips grew into a smile. “How strong is he?”

Alex waited a beat, drawing out the moment. He’d only get to do this once. “She is the brightest thing I’ve ever seen. Her bloom was so bright it hurt to look at it, and she was still fully functional.”

His friend stilled, one hand poised for a blow that didn’t fall. “She?”

Alex could almost hear the click as the final piece of Thomas’s grand plan fell neatly into place, making the largest, most theoretical of his ideas a reality.

His arms fell to his sides. He turned to Alex. “Tell me.”

“Do you remember Three’s Senior Councilor Aide, name of Gracey?” Alex asked. “Caught being curious about things he had no need to know? She’s his daughter.”

Thomas frowned his disagreement with a slight shake of his head. “Gracey had a daughter and a son. The daughter’s just a mid-level. Like all girls.” His voice was disappointed.

“He had another daughter. He faked her death and hid her away.” Alex took a breath. “After his death, as soon as she was old enough, she left the city. She’s been living on the edge of tribal lands and working as a black market Spark. We put ourselves on her schedule. And when we pulled up she had a corona around her like the sun at full eclipse. Like I said, it hurt to look at her.

“It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” he said. Emotion tightened his throat, and he swallowed to clear it. It had been beautiful, but still.

Thomas was still now, utterly focused on his friend. “One of the disappeared girls,” he said. “How old?”

“Twenty-four. Young enough, and old enough. Tiny thing. Big green eyes. Coated in freckles. Not pretty, exactly, not that it matters, but stunning in her own way.” He frowned. What did that have to do with anything? He barked a laugh as he focused on what mattered—the personality they’d have to work around to get her to join them. Just because he admired her ballsiness didn’t mean he couldn’t recognize that her strength would make things harder. “She’s a tough little pain in the ass.”

Thomas took a deep breath. “Please tell me you’ve brought her here?”

He shook his head. “She got away—”

“Dammit, Alex! This is important!” His gloved hands shot up to frame his head in anger and disbelief.

“I damn well know how important it is! She took us out. Took. Us. Out.”

They had hoped to find a Spark evolved to a dangerous, exquisite extreme. They’d found her, and that presented a danger all its own.

Alex ran his hands through his hair. “She took us out long enough to get out through her escape tunnel. She made it to the tribe. I couldn’t do anything at that point.”

“You know where she is?”

Alex nodded.

“Then we’ll go get her. Tonight.”

Alex closed his eyes for a moment. Shit. He’d figured Thomas’s reaction would be strong. But this was on the extreme end.

“No, Thom.”

“Yes! She cannot get away. She belongs with us.”

Portals by Maer Wilson Blog Tour - Playlist + Giveaway

portals 400x600

Portals (Modern Magics #2) by Maer Wilson
Sci-Fi/Urban Fantasy

For supernatural detectives Thulu and La Fi, “normal” is a relative term. La Fi is a medium, Thulu is a finder, and their usual clients are already dead.

But when their friend Reo is shot, and a group of stranded angels shows up at their house for help finding a missing child, things are striking too close to home.

And the portals that let the magical races return to Earth are opening on their own.

With trips off-world, a kidnapped psychic and changes to their own abilities, Thulu and La Fi are hit with a lot more than they usually handle. Of course, their magical friends are there to help, but even they may not be enough to save an increasingly unstable Earth.

Portals is the cross genre (Sci Fi/Urban Fantasy) sequel to Relics and is Book 2 in the Modern Magics series.

Playlist for Portals by Maer Wilson

There is a lot of music that I listen to when I’m writing. Today I’ll share some of the music I was listening to when I wrote Portals: Modern Magics, Book 2.

First off, I almost always listen to instrumental soundtracks. That’s because I’d be writing the words down if I listened to songs with lyrics. So instead, I listen to film and game soundtracks and classical music.

Music from the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings soundtracks and other epic music was often playing in the background while writing Portals. Those albums alone account for hours of music, since I have soundtracks from all the films in each series. I also listened to music from Star Trek and Transformers, plus gaming soundtracks like World of Warcraft.

There is an exception to my no songs rule though. Music by Adiemus also had and still has a prominent spot in my writing playlist. So what makes them so different? Well, their songs do not contain real words. They are made-up words used to create a vocal instrument and are the brain-child of composer Karl Jenkins.

Probably his most famous song is “Adiemus,” off their Songs of Sanctuary album and is one of my favorites. You can listen to it here: I first discovered them when Pandora played their “Song of Tears,” which you can listen to here:

These days, I’m listening to other soundtracks, but I’ll save those for when we release the book I’m working on now. Magics is the third book in the series and is in revisions. It’s scheduled to release in 2015.

Thanks for stopping by. Happy Holidays and Happy Reading to all!

The people of Veiled Gorge slept peacefully. The small, shrouded village remained a quiet and tranquil community despite the chaotic events of five years ago. No longer did every conversation among villagers dwell on the attack of General Akkrid or the liberation of the village, with the help of the Sorak no less. The new Council Chamber, built taller and stronger, stood as a symbol of pride and resilience to those who had lived through the attack years ago.

Life in Veiled Gorge had returned to normal.

Ave Wilkory, the village mayor for going on eleven years, was regarded by most as the guiding force that had helped the village to heal and rebuild. Only the new hot-tempered councilman opposed the mayor on most issues. Regardless, the village had recovered, and it had healed, and its people slept easy, feeling safe and secure in their homes again.

But, on this night, a dark presence lingered in the shadows. A mysterious intruder slipped through the quiet village, fracturing the fragile sense of security that was so difficult to embrace by many. While no physical harm was done, villagers were left with the painful feeling of being violated. Precious heirlooms were taken and family treasures stolen.

On this night, that which was forgotten was again remembered, and loose ends from long ago began to unravel, revealing a new and darker chapter to the story.

Guest Post by Milda Harris

Prom Stories and the Idea Behind Crashing Prom

I know I’m not the only girl who loves prom stories. That’s obvious by the fact that prom stories show up all over the place in TV, movies, and books. There’s just something magical about that high school dance. Even the guys I’ve talked to about prom have a story about it. I find that interesting. Most guys I know now could care less about things like dances. Still, if you ask them about their prom some of them have really strong thoughts about it, especially if their date hooked up with another guy. Eek! Drama!

Prom is usually one of the go to places for things to happen in YA books. That is why I wanted to write a NA book with prom at its center. It’s a little different and to me that sounded interesting.

So, I started to think about my own experiences and my prom story. I went to my prom with a friend. It was just okay. I actually remember talking to my friend in the bathroom about it and how prom had been overhyped. She agreed with me, which surprised me. She was there with her ex-boyfriend, who she totally kept making out with, so in some ways her night was actually going way better than mine even though she didn’t think it was the perfect magical night either. In the end my date and I did have fun, but it was just alright. I really wish I could have gone with a guy I was head over heels for. Then it would have been amazing. I wanted that prom moment. Heck, I’d still like it. I think everyone planning for their prom wants that outcome.

So, to me, it seems like you’d want the same things from your prom, no matter what your age. You’d want the dress, the shoes, the limo, and the totally amazing hot date. I even googled more prom stories just to see other opinions and experiences. There’s fake proms for adults thrown in Los Angeles. You literally pretend you’re going to prom. I also found some news articles about a retirement home having a prom. See? You’re really never too old for prom!

So, I decided. Crashing Prom was going to be about how my main character, Avery Rylee, got to her prom and all of the fun things that go with it, even though she was twenty-four and well past prom age. It’s a prom story, but it’s about the journey to the prom. Maybe that’s why prom is so huge in our minds. It is the last dance of high school. It’s the end of an era, a celebration of it really, since it’s usually just weeks before graduation. Our high school experience was the journey to it. It’s all about getting there and, of course, having the best night ever!
