Synopsis:

For Aris, a talented wingjet pilot, war means sacrificing everything: her home, her name, her face—and the one promise she swore she’d never break.

In the small village of Lux, everyone flies wingjets, but nobody flies them like Aris Haan. When she’s not dancing through the skies, she’s spending every minute with Calix, whom she’s loved since childhood. They plan to Promise, but instead he is sent to defend their dominion against a bloody invasion. Determined not to lose him, Aris follows, joining an underground network of women inside the male-only military. Using secret technology that allows her to pass as a man, she becomes “Aristos”, a Flyer in a search-and-rescue unit.

As Aris grows stronger on the battlefield and more comfortable in her guise as Aristos, her personal mission becomes less and less clear. When she and her enigmatic commander, Major Vidar, uncover an astonishing conspiracy that could destroy everything, she must make a choice that will determine not only the fate of her heart, but the future of her dominion.

My Review

This book is a really great sci-fi novel and I was pulled into the story right from page one. It follows two different, but related storylines (one major, one more secondary) and understanding all the new info/characters took me a little while to sort out but once I got that understood the book got even better and I seemed to fly through the pages, sadly making the book end all to soon!

The main character in Shattered Veil is Aris, and she lives in a small town that is pretty cut-off from the war raging on around them. They know about the war of course and there are plenty of boys - girls aren't allowed to join the army, they're too much of a 'precious' commodity - willing to join in the fight, but Aris's life is pretty sheltered, at least in the beginning. When her boyfriend, Calix, is assigned to a military base due to the ever-growing war, Aris is distraught and when she receives an odd 'job' opportunity from a stranger, she accepts in the hope to do something worthwhile and to find a way to be with Calix. The 'job' Aris is offered is pretty much this: we want you to use your kick-butt flying skills to aid in the war, oh, and since you're a girl and you're not allowed to fight you need to pretend to be a boy. This may sound like an overdone, tired story idea, but there is so much more to Shattered Veil and this is done in a new, refreshing way!

One thing I really enjoyed was the Diatous Veil. The Diatous Veil is a holographic/projection device and it's what's used to hide Aris's female form (no breast-binding!) by projection the image of a man around her. The Veil has it's downfalls but they're the sort of thing you'd expect for a projection, such as people can't touch the projection, what they feel will still be your true, real form, and even though Aris looks like a man she still has to act, walk, and talk like a man if she wants to keep her cover.

I love Aris and her character really grows throughout the story and by the end of this book she is no longer the naive, small-town girl we met at the start. In fact all the characters in this book were amazing and with a great story to boot, I am really loving this series. This is a wonderful sci-fi novel with a really enjoyable plot and characters that will latch onto your heart and refuse to let go, I cannot wait to read book two!

  1. I really enjoyed this book. And I totally agree with you that it was done really original. I liked the storyline from Aris her point of view more than the other, but I did like how the other storyline was nessecary for the plot and added a point of view we wouldn't have known of otherwise. The character develoment was another thing I really liked about this book, Aris grows so much and changes a lot.
I can't wait to see where the author takes this series next.

  2. It sounds so character driven and Aris sounds like someone I would like as an MC. Character growth is also very important especially in this genre! And it all sounds so well crafted and original! Great review, Myra!
