GRACE WAS STANDING forlornly on the only outside terrace of the 48th level of the 256th skyrise on Valhai. She had put on a bodywrap to protect her from the very low pressure and pulled on one of the oxygen mask packs, which meant that she could stand for as long as she wanted gazing out over the landscape. It was the one place she knew that her mother would never come to find her. Her mother was terrified of open spaces, as most Sellites now were.

Her sister-in-law’s words rang in her ears. “You should have been genetically modified!” They had been bitter words, and now they wouldn’t go away.

She gave a deep sigh. It was true that she excelled at nothing. All the other Sellites her own age, fourteen, were already sure of their future. She didn’t want to do anything. And it wasn’t that she liked doing nothing; it was just that there wasn’t anything she was good at. All because she was the only unmodified child on Sell. Her mother had been caught on Xiantha when she was expecting, and it hadn’t been possible to apply the usual procedures.

I wish I had, too!” Grace had replied. But it wasn’t true. Sometimes she couldn’t help thinking that everybody else was a little bit too sure of themselves. So good at whatever they had been genetically enhanced to do. Especially her sister-in-law, Amanita. The problem was that Grace herself didn’t fit into their system. They were all continually pushing and pulling, trying to make her into something she wasn’t. Except for her mother, perhaps.

“Your father would be ashamed of you!” Amanita had snapped. That too was probably true. But her father was dead. Xenon 48 had given way to Xenon 49; her brother had become insufferable and her sister-in-law triumphant. They had already moved up to the floor above, leaving only Grace and her mother on the 48th level.

Grace let her eyes look towards the horizon. It was a bereft, abrupt landscape. What little atmosphere there was on Valhai was transparent and there was no cloud formation to hide the stars from the ground. Although there was either perpetual day or perpetual night on Valhai, all of the skyrises had been laid down in the twilight zone, that area where the sun was perpetually just under the horizon. A yellow-orange glow was all that could be seen of the red dwarf star, Almagest.

Author Bio - Gillian Andrews

I am English, although I live in Spain now. I've worked at all sorts of things, but have been writing too, on and off, since I was little. I have always been passionate about cosmology and astrophysics, so it was exciting to be able to bring that aspect into the series.  I recently finished a masters in astronomy and astrophysics.

Valhai is the book I always wanted to write, but I got so involved with the characters myself that I simply had to go on writing about them, which turned a one-off novel into a series. I hope readers will identify with them and enjoy them too. I myself have been practically living in The Ammonite Galaxy for the last five years. It has become so real to me that I can almost touch it!

The books out so far in the series are:

Book One: Valhai
Book Two: Kwaide
Book Three: Xiantha
Book Four: Pictoria
Book Five: The Lost Animas
Book Six: The Nam
Book Seven: The Trimorphs (to be published 2015)

Ammonite Planets is the omnibus edition of Books #1-3 and is exclusive to the Kindle store, and Ammonite Stars is the omnibus edition of Books #4-5, also exclusive to the Kindle store.

A Couple of Favourite Holiday Recipes!

Karen’s Favorite Holiday Recipe

Okay, I’m a total cheater. When I make sugar cookies with my kids, I use the Betty Crocker sugar cookie pouches. It’s just so much easier! We can bust those cookies out in no time. But I do make homemade frosting and the secret I learned from my grandma to make the frosting taste extra delicious? Include a splash of coffee. Yes, coffee! Sadly, she doesn’t make sugar cookies during the holidays anymore but I do. Trying to keep up the tradition!

Frosting recipe:
2 cups powdered sugar
1 stick salted butter
1-2 tablespoons of milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Splash of coffee

Stir until desired thickness/consistency. Taste test to make sure it’s sweet enough to your liking! Then get to frosting all those cookies. ;)

Here’s a link to a photo from a couple of years ago – me making all the cookies and various holiday goodies and the mess I leave behind (note the diet Coke in the photo, too funny):

Marquita’s Favorite Holiday Recipe

So, I’m not much of a cook, but Hot Builder (my husband) is and he makes the most delicious chocolate tarts.  Every one loves them, especially me!

Chocolate Tarts

8 ounces of semi-sweet dark chocolate, chopped
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/3 cup of milk
¾ cup of heavy whipping cream
1 package of individual small pie shells
1 tub of cool whip

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • Place pie shells on baking sheet
  • Combine heavy whipping cream and milk in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until hot. Don’t forget to stir! Add chocolate, stirring until blended. Let stand for about 5 minutes. Whisk in egg. Pour mixture into pie shells and bake for about 23 minutes. Allow to cool for fifteen minutes. Place tarts upside down on plate and add dollop (or two or three) of cool whip on top. Serves six, unless you like to share. I don’t.

The Naughty List by L.A. Kelley Blog Tour - Interview + Giveaway

The Naughty List by L.A. Kelley
Published: 25th October 2013 by The Wild Rose Press, Inc. (Black Rose)

Not your mama’s yuletide tale unless she drank too much egg nog or was born with a cheeky sense of humor.

Murder, mystical artifacts, an invisible demon with anger management issues, and an overbearing cupid—not what Rosalie Thatcher wished for on her Christmas list.

The holidays had always been a magical time for Rosalie, but not this year. Stephanie, her new manager at Penrose’s Department Store, is determined to make this season the most profitable in the store’s history, even if it sucks the life out of every employee. Introducing arbitrary rules and stealing the affections of Anthony, the cute temp Santa, were bad enough, but forcing Rosalie into the stupid elf hat was the worst. The worst, that is, until she meets a real E.L.F. (Elemental Life Form) named David and gets lassoed into a desperate hunt for the stolen Naughty and Nice List. Rosalie and David must dodge a murderous invisible demon and recover the missing artifact before hellhounds track them down. The couple race against time for without the magical guidance of the Naughty and Nice List, the world will tumble toward eternal chaos.

Interview with L.A. Kelley

How does it feel to actually have your book out there, for everyone to read?

I read a newspaper account once about a man who was lost at sea and then finally rescued after nearly sixty days. Imagine the joy he felt at that first sight of land. Being published feels twice as good without being sunburned or waterlogged.

Your inspiration to write The Naughty List:

A few years back I was in Barnes & Noble during the holiday season. All the cashiers and stock workers wore oversized, jingly Santa hats. Frankly, they looked ridiculous. When I got to the cashier to pay for my purchase I asked if the managers had to wear them, too. She leaned over the counter and whispered harshly, “Of course not. It was their idea.” The idea was born for a story about a harried clerk during the Christmas rush who unexpectedly discovers a little holiday magic.

Santa had to be included, but I didn’t want to go the traditional route. I decided to update the character and add figures from other mythologies and religions. It was fun trying to imagine how ancient beings would adapt to a modern world.

Tell us a little about how you got published:

I’ve been writing all my life, but never had the nerve to submit anything. Several people encouraged me to suck it up and send my work out into the world. After a lot of rejection I was finally published with a company called Wild Rose Press. I’ve never looked back.

Talk to us a little about your main characters

The most interesting characters to me are normal people dumped into abnormal situations who end up finding strength they never suspected. Rosalie is hardworking, sensible, and kind. All those factors come into play when she discovers a hidden world of supernatural beings and one particular E.L.F. who desperately needs her help. Rosalie has never thought of herself as courageous and yet she jumps into this wild adventure, willing to risk her life in order to protect the people she cares about.

David accepted the heavy burden of a family responsibility. When mistakes occur he shoulders the blame without excuses and is willing to put his life on the line to make it right. David is brave and loyal with a dogged determination to get at the truth. Although he doesn’t know it yet, he has the makings of a great leader for his people.

Neither David nor Rosalie has been lucky finding love. Perhaps with a little holiday magic, love will find them instead.

Do an acronym for The Naughty List (one adjective for each letter)

T Tinselly
H Heartfelt
E Enchanting

N Naughty or Nice. Take your pick.
A Amusing
U Unusual
G Gripping
H Humorous
T Tender
Y Yuletide

L Lively
I Irreverent
S Sassy
T Thrilling

Okay, you got me going now…
The Hero Elf Needs An Uninhibited Guide. Hearts Triumph, Yet Love Is Squarely Tested.

What is your opinion on negative reviews?

It depends on how the review was written. Having intelligent feedback is helpful. No writer wakes up one day and says, “I think I’ll write a lousy story.” A careful critique can gently point out weaknesses in character and plot and help a writer improve her craft.

Harsh reviews that offer no constructive feedback are painful. It’s as if a stranger stopped me on the street to say I had an ugly baby. I accept everyone has a right to their opinion, but rather wish they’d kept that particular one to themselves.

Fragile Reign Release Day

Fragile Reign by Stacey O'Neale

Fragile Reign (Mortal Enchantment #3) by Stacey O'Neale

It’s been a week since all hell broke loose…

Rumors of King Taron’s weakened powers have left the air court vulnerable. Kalin is desperate to awaken her akasha powers, except she doesn’t know how. Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. To solidify her position, the council has advised her to marry Sebastian—a high ranking air elemental she’s never met and her betrothed.

Will Kalin sacrifice her relationship with Rowan to strengthen her court?

Rowan and Marcus return to a fire court in turmoil. Liana’s death has fueled the fire elementals’ distrust against the air and woodland courts. The unbalanced elements have set off natural disasters all over the mortal world. Rowan takes the throne to restore balance, promising to unite the fire court. But not all elementals are happy with his leadership. Many are secretly loyal to Valac, which means Rowan needs to find allies for his cause.

After Marcus left, the lack of sleep and overuse of my power had finally caught up to me. My lids were heavy, making it hard to keep my eyes open. I laid down on the nearest bed, sinking into the softness of the vanilla scented pillows. I could rest here until tomorrow, and then meet Kalin on the beach at sundown. As I closed my eyes, I imagined her in that sexy sundress with the ocean breeze wafting through her red curls. My lips tingled remembering the raspberry taste of her kisses. With all this craziness going on, she was the one thing that made sense. The only person who could make me forget about everything for a little while.

Kalin was the one I wanted. The only one I needed. I shook my head. What was wrong with me? It was too soon to be thinking about this stuff, right? It had only been a few weeks. And what did I know about real feelings, anyway? Had it not been for Marcus, I would never even know what it felt like to care for someone. Love was never part of my life. My mother thought love was a weakness—a totally worthless emotion compared to power and control.

But that still didn’t explain how I was feeling. Why everything seemed better when Kalin was around. Why my fingers ached to touch her. Why her pain shattered me to the core. I put my hands over my face. Or, maybe the lack of sleep was making me delusional. With a smirk, I gave in to the darkness that was overwhelming me and fell asleep.

Book Blitz: Anomaly by Tonya Kuper - Excerpt + Giveaway

Anomaly (Schrodinger's Consortium #1) by Tonya Kuper
Published: 15th November 2014 by Entangled Teen

Reality is only an illusion.
Except for those who can control it…

Worst. Birthday. Ever.
My first boyfriend dumped me – happy birthday, Josie!- my dad is who knows where, I have some weird virus that makes me want to hurl, and now my ex is licking another girl’s tonsils. Oh, and I’m officially the same age as my brother was when he died. Yeah, today is about as fun-filled as the swamps of Dagobah. But then weird things start happening…

Like I make something materialize just by thinking about it.

When hot badass Reid Wentworth shows up on a motorcycle, everything changes. Like, everything. Who I am. My family. What really happened to my brother. Existence. I am Oculi, and I have the ability to change reality with my thoughts. Now Reid, in all his hotness, is charged with guiding and protecting me as I begin learning how to bend reality. And he’s the only thing standing between me and the secret organization that wants me dead…

Another bell rang. I spun wildly, searching for the source, and my foot slipped out from under me. My left foot joined my right, sliding down a rocky surface.

A scream tore past my lips.

My brain fought to figure out what was happening as my hands gripped for something—anything—because I was falling. My head swiveled.

I couldn’t comprehend the giant, gaping crack I’d fallen into. A fissure in the ground at least eight feet wide. My fingers sunk into the cracked concrete, barely holding on. Sliding.

Then I looked down.

No end in sight. An abyss.

Everything around me blurred, and all I could see was black. And in that blackness was the one thing I was terrified of: death. My stomach pitched and my chest heaved, but no air moved in or out of my lungs. I was suffocating.

Ripping my eyes away from the darkness, I focused on my hands, still grasping at the gravely terrain crumbling beneath them. My right foot slipped, and my fingers dug deeper into the ground. It was a mixture of rock, and mud, and I didn’t know what. It felt like glass shards were being shoved under my fingernails.

I dug in with my toes, using the muscles in my legs to slow my descent. I slid to a halt, but the rocks and substrate continued to crumble beneath me. I searched blindly for a sturdy foothold. My foot found a rocky lip, but as soon as I thought it was safe, it gave way. My right silver flip-flop plummeted into the darkness so eager to swallow me.

Attempting to force my gaze upward, I focused on the contrast of the dark surrounding me and the bright light above, the line where they met. Technically, I’d die in broad daylight.

“Think, Josie.” The voice was strong, demanding. It took a second for it to register. “Josie, look at me.”

Reid. Reid was here. That’s where I was. I was at Reid’s place. I’d come here to train. I’m an Oculi. It all became clear as I broke free from the terror.

I wrenched my head toward his voice, my gaze meeting his. He crouched above me at the surface, his eyes my lifeline because he didn’t offer a hand. He wasn’t about to coddle me. That wasn’t his style.

He said, “Breathe. Think.”

Dragging in an uneven breath, looking into his clear eyes, something clicked in the far reaches of my mind.

I Pushed with no effort. No headache, no nausea. I blinked, and stairs carved themselves into the side of the chasm, jutted out as if they’d always been there. With great hesitancy, I climbed the stairs on all fours, close to the wall. I could see the surface, right within my reach.

The stairs were gone.
I felt myself tumbling, falling. Flailing along the wall of the abyss with nothing to stop my descent.
“React, Josie!”

I focused on the surface, on the light growing dimmer the farther I skidded. Earth. Ground beneath my feet. I Pushed. And Pushed.

Pain. Nausea. Dizziness.

Thunder sounded below, like the darkness of the chasm was rising up to swallow me whole.

Something hit my feet so hard that it tossed me in the air.

Up. Up. Into the light.

My thoughts didn’t coalesce clearly, but I felt myself rising. The pain behind my eyes made my vision waver. I shot to the warehouse floor. Reid reached for me as I collapsed.

My lungs rebelled, and tears burned trails down my cheeks. Dirt covered my hands and caked beneath my fingertips. One fingernail had broken to the quick. It bled sullenly. I wasn’t about to look weak in front of him, though, so I held out my arm to ward off his offer of help. I stood tall on trembling legs.

Reid closed the gap between us, his arms extended like he would embrace me. “Josie—”

The light streaming through the warehouse windows dimmed and flickered. Darkness edged my periphery. I balled my trembling fist and slammed my knuckles into his cheek. White heat shot through my hand before everything went black.
