Portals (Modern Magics #2) by Maer Wilson
Sci-Fi/Urban Fantasy

For supernatural detectives Thulu and La Fi, “normal” is a relative term. La Fi is a medium, Thulu is a finder, and their usual clients are already dead.

But when their friend Reo is shot, and a group of stranded angels shows up at their house for help finding a missing child, things are striking too close to home.

And the portals that let the magical races return to Earth are opening on their own.

With trips off-world, a kidnapped psychic and changes to their own abilities, Thulu and La Fi are hit with a lot more than they usually handle. Of course, their magical friends are there to help, but even they may not be enough to save an increasingly unstable Earth.

Portals is the cross genre (Sci Fi/Urban Fantasy) sequel to Relics and is Book 2 in the Modern Magics series.

Playlist for Portals by Maer Wilson

There is a lot of music that I listen to when I’m writing. Today I’ll share some of the music I was listening to when I wrote Portals: Modern Magics, Book 2.

First off, I almost always listen to instrumental soundtracks. That’s because I’d be writing the words down if I listened to songs with lyrics. So instead, I listen to film and game soundtracks and classical music.

Music from the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings soundtracks and other epic music was often playing in the background while writing Portals. Those albums alone account for hours of music, since I have soundtracks from all the films in each series. I also listened to music from Star Trek and Transformers, plus gaming soundtracks like World of Warcraft.

There is an exception to my no songs rule though. Music by Adiemus also had and still has a prominent spot in my writing playlist. So what makes them so different? Well, their songs do not contain real words. They are made-up words used to create a vocal instrument and are the brain-child of composer Karl Jenkins.

Probably his most famous song is “Adiemus,” off their Songs of Sanctuary album and is one of my favorites. You can listen to it here: I first discovered them when Pandora played their “Song of Tears,” which you can listen to here:

These days, I’m listening to other soundtracks, but I’ll save those for when we release the book I’m working on now. Magics is the third book in the series and is in revisions. It’s scheduled to release in 2015.

Thanks for stopping by. Happy Holidays and Happy Reading to all!
